VMOD-P5
Pentium-based VMEbus Computer
¡@
Your VMEbus platform for
expandable solutions
Powerful Pentium
systems tailored to your application using
the VMOD-P5 Carrier and our range of MODULbus
I/O boards
The VMOD-P5 is a high performance VMEbus computer based on Intel's Pentium CPU. It extends the already existing
VMOD CPU series (VMOD-32, VMOD-40/60) in the upper performance range.
It is targeted to embedded applications and features the MODULbus mezzanine concept, so that it can be equipped with 3
(6) modules from a multitude of existing solutions. Therefore the VMOD-P5 can ideally be used as an intelligent I/O
controller for analog, digital or field-bus connections.
For example up to 6 CANbus channels are controllale when using VMOD-P5 + VMOD-IXP5 + 6xVMOD-ICAN3. If your
application requires disc- or tape-drives, this can be achieved with the VMOD-SCSI to add an SCSI-bus interface to the
VMOD-P5. By featuring the VMEbus, the VMOD-P5 can be used in scaleable high performance applications. Further, I/O
capabilities can be greatly increased via the VMEbus.
The VMOD-P5 uses the popular double eurocard form factor, as this is mostly standard for industrial applications. The
board is built around Intel's 430HX chip set, featuring 512KB second level cache and up to 64MB main memory. Memory
is added to the board with a proprietary memory module. The VMOD-P5 is equipped with 512 KB boot Flash, intended to
store an operating system. The boot Flash is factory programmed with a boot loader software that is capable of
maintaining and starting
the actual operating system.
Two serial lines (RS232) are available on the front panel and can be used as console ports or data transfer lines. One of
the serial lines features all modem control signals. Networking applications can be handled with the on-board Ethernet
interface.
All versions of the VMOD-P5 have a PC-style RTC with battery back-up and
hardware watch-dog on board. Status LEDs
are available on the front panel, and can be controlled by user applications.
Although the VMOD-P5 is close to a standard PC, it makes some omissions: among them are the keyboard controller,
parallel port, floppy-disk interface and video controller. Thereby it becomes clear that this board is not targeted to certain
PC operating systems such as WinNT, Win95 or even MS-DOS. Instead the VMOD-P5 is fully supported by VxWorks as
a powerful real time operating system. Additionally the GNU-tool development package is available for the VMOD-P5.
